Article by Holly Guymer, St John Ambulance (NT)
When we were flying to Adelaide I got nervous because I didn't know what to expect, but everything was fine. When we got to the campsite it wasn't what I expected at all but the view was amazing. I also really liked meeting everyone and moving into the dorms.
The onsite activities were the flying fox, raft building, bridge building, rock climbing, obstacle course with mud pit, giant swing and many other activities. Another favourite thing we did when we were exploring the campsite was when we went down to the river and watched the water flow. Sarah and I loved it. That's when I asked if they have crocodiles in Adelaide.
Victor Harbour was cool. I loved the scavenger hunt, my team did well, and we got 25 out of 31. Along the way of the scavenger hunt there was a lolly shop that everyone went into; Charlotte bought lots of butter beer. There was also a mini show type thing there and Makaila and I went on the Ferris wheel. We were late back to our meet up spot though.
Hahndorf was cool tot, but we had free time there. In smaller groups we went to heaps of places and Mel bought a cuckoo clock. We were also pushing Elisabeth around in a wheelchair because she hurt her ankle the night before. There was like 6 lolly shops in Hahndorf.
The food at the campsite was tasty, especially the burgers and subs, and we couldn't fall asleep straight away because Sarah kept talking. We woke up early because Makaila set an alarm and didn't even wake up to it. Poor Charlotte had to turn it off.
Competitions were cool. We were third in isolation and we each were given a task. I had to write an invitation for our division’s birthday, Sarah had to write a patient record form and Indiana had a to write an article for cadets. In our scenario we had four casualties: a snake bite, angina, nose bleed and a laceration. I had the snake bite and I think I did ok. At the awards, we placed 5th. A few days later we got to see our results and with my invitation and my treating of the snake bite and we all did good for our first Nationals as a team.
On the last day, we went to the St John Museum and saw the old cadet uniforms. On our flight back, we stopped in Alice Springs and said goodbye to Aaron and Elisabeth. When we got back it was bucketing down in rain and our parents were there to meet us.

Silver ferns from the NZ Cadets, April 2015
Six Cadet divisions in New Zealand have been busy making silver fern motifs for their Australian counterparts to incorporate into their ANZAC wreaths to be used on ANZAC Day. (Sprigs-of-wattle motifs have already been sent across the Tasman to these New Zealand divisions). Cadets from Australia and New Zealand assembled the wattle sprigs and silver ferns in order to produce their TransTasman St John ANZAC wreaths.
In January 2014 St John Ambulance Australia will pay host to the St John International Cadet Camp and International Cadet Championships. And, for the first time in history the Cadet Championships will be webcasted live around the world. Join Paul Compton for two unmissable days of first aid action.
