How it works
Your Division
Each group or division meets regularly—usually once a week during school terms—and it’s always something to look forward to! Meetings are packed with cool activities like learning first aid, playing fun games, and working on Proficiency Courses. Plus, there are awesome activity days where you get to explore new places, join competitions, and even go on multi-day camps!

There is a lot more to being a St John Youth Member than first aid. St John provides you with many opportunities and recognises your achievements.
Camps and Activities
As a youth member, you will have the opportunity to participate in activity days or nights that involve visiting new places, participating in competitions and even camps! These kinds of activities are held so you can:
Camps can occur in your group/division, or at a regional, State/Territory, National and even international level. Plus you may even have the opportunity to attend NatCamp, which is the annual National Camp for young members that is held in a different State or Territory each year.
Every few years, St John youth members also has the opportunity to participate in international youth camp, where you could meet other St John members from all over the world!
Service to the community
Service to the community is an important part of being in St John. It is about giving your time freely to help people in the community need.

In recognition of service to the community, St John provides a number of special awards which are available to members aged 12+. Service goes to the heart of being a St John member!
Leadership roles
Many Youth Members feel that they are ready to take on leadership roles in their division. St John makes this possible by offering leadership courses for young members with leadership ambitions.
Becoming a Level 1 or 2 Youth Leader (in some places, these leaders are called Corporal sor Sergeants) is a great way of learning valuable new skills, helping others and taking responsibility. Ask you Leader about youth leadership programs!
Cadet or Youth Leader of the Year
There are always young members who stand out in St John— someone who has done something special, or gone the extra mile to excel at what they do.
Each year, St John in the States/Territories acknowledge one special and high achieving youth member with the Cadet or Youth Leader of the Year Award. This is a very important appointment!
Competitions
First Aid Competitions are an awesome way to test your skills and push yourself! They are held in your local area and also interstate and sometimes overseas. You’ll get to:

Developing life skills
St John Youth Proficiency Badges
As a Youth or Junior member, you will have the opportunity to work on courses for all different interest areas. It is not all about first aid! There 25 different badges to choose from and most divisions work on 2 to 4 badges a year. Once you have completed a course, you can sew your badge on your uniform and receive a special certificate. You can learn about emergency management, project management and all about First Nations People – and many more!
The Grand Prior’s Award
The Grand Prior’s Award is one of the highest awards you can receive as a youth member— to get it is a major achievement! The Award is the special award of Grand Prior, Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester.
To achieve The Grand Prior’s Award, youth members need to complete 12 Proficiency Courses, with 2 of the 12 needing to be the Knowledge of the Order and Health Care and Caring.
The Southern Cross Award
The Southern Cross Award is designed to be a flexible framework of personal development and achievement for any St John member aged 16 to 25. The activities are not pre-determined— you choose the activities that you want to do. This is a great award if you need some flexibility!
Award
The Sovereign’s Award is the highest award that can be achieved by youth members aged 16-25 internationally. It is designed to encourage members to engage in personal development through participation in their community, develop initiative and broaden their experiences. The Sovereign’s Award is awarded by the Sovereign Head of the Order, Queen Elizabeth II!
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award was initiative by His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, in 1956. It is a prestigious award and operates in more than 140 countries around the globe. The Award is open to young people aged from 14 to 25 years and the Award consists of three awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold) with 4 sections (physical recreation, skill, service and adventurous journey).
The Award may be completed in conjunction with your St John activities in participating states/territories. Ask your Leader for further details or visit www.dukeofed.com.au.
